One month from today, a wide variety of institutions in Erfurt will once again open their doors for the Long Night of Science. The CiS Research Institute will kick off the event on 6th November 2026, at 6:00 PM with an extensive program that invites guests of all ages – young and old – to discover, marvel, and get involved.
Here’s what awaits all curious visitors until around 11:00 PM at the CiS Research Institute:
Small Things on a grand scale – High-Resolution microscopy in nature and technology
In the measurement technology lab, visitors can view the tiniest pollen grains, insects, or electronic components under extreme magnification using a scanning electron microscope (SEM).
Flight simulation in an ultralight aircraft with the Arnstadt Aeroclub
In the actual cockpit of an ultralight aircraft (UL) – rather than on a computer with a joystick – those interested can sit at the controls of a real UL and try their hand at accelerating, taking off, and landing it gently.
Apprenticeship programs at the CiS Research Institute
Young people interested in technology can learn about technical training and degree programs at the CiS Research Institute, talk to the staff in charge, put on a cleanroom suit, and use a microscope themselves.
We also offer numerous hands-on experiments and demonstrations – all focused on silicon-based sensor technology:
- Half full or half empty? How a pressure sensor measures fill level or depth
- Hot or cold? Detecting heat signatures with the FLIR camera
- Contact force – How much power does a curling stone need?
- Structural monitoring – Measuring strain wirelessly and self-powered
- Please exhale! Breath gas analysis using infrared technology
- LEGO interferometer: Precision laboratory technology made from LEGO bricks
- Experience quantum technologies – what a diamond can do
- Spot on! – How a small quadrant detector detects the direction of incident light
- Discovering Superconductivity
- Who’s the strongest? Measuring the smallest forces with a horseshoe
- How much does your name weigh? Precision scales in action
We look forward to your visit and your curiosity!
