On 20th June 2026, the CiS Research Institute invited visitors to discover, participate, and marvel at interactive experiments and demonstrations as part of Ilmenau’s Science Night.
From 17:00 to 22:00, visitors of all ages were able to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of research and technology. In the foyer of the Newton Building, the CiS Research Institute from Erfurt—an affiliated institute of the Technical University of Ilmenau—presented a diverse range of its silicon-based microsensors for visitors to explore and try out.
People of all ages, young and old, used their own hands to measure the forces at work when bending a horseshoe. Tiny strain gauges on the horseshoe detected even the slightest changes in force.
The curling experiment also sparked some competitive spirit. At first glance, this Olympic sport seems simple, but it is extremely physically demanding when sweeping to influence the path of the curling stone. Within 20 seconds of intense sweeping, between 600 and 1,600 kJ of energy is required—far more than a typical slice of white bread, which contains 300 to 350 kJ. In a single curling game, about 60 stones are swept, covering a distance of 1.7 kilometers. Top curlers can move the broom back and forth four times in a single second. The forces exerted during the sweeping process are measured using Si strain gauges and visualized immediately.
Another highlight was the live demonstration of a Si pressure sensor for level measurement. By measuring the level in a beer mug, the demonstration showed on a small scale how sensors can be used to determine the level in tanks, wells, or barrels.
Diamonds are not just gemstones. They have many industrial applications. Synthetic diamonds containing specific impurities—such as nitrogen—embedded in mini-sensors can measure magnetic fields and thus contribute to the exploration of mineral deposits.
The evening in Ilmenau provided a brief glimpse into current research topics at the CiS Research Institute and showcased their practical applications. Those who were unable to attend the Ilmenau Science Night can visit the CiS Research Institute in Erfurt and look forward to the Long Night of Science on 6th November 2026, in Erfurt.
A big thank you to our on-site team and all participants for their dedication.
