Next Wednesday, IVAM e.V. Fachverband für Mikrotechnik invites to the monthly Mid-Week Coffee Break. At the virtual technology talk between IVAM members, the CiS Research Institute will be the host on 19.05.2021. Our business unit manager MOEMS Dr. Martin Schädel will give the participants an insight into the topic “IR components for contactless temperature measurement and gas analysis”. After the impulse lecture on the current technology topic, the participants can get into conversation together.
About the impulse lecture:
The infrared spectral range provides information on numerous material and condition parameters. By detecting thermal radiation, for example, the temperature of objects can be evaluated without contact and over greater distances. Individual absorption bands in the infrared identify and quantify chemical compounds and gas molecules.
At first glance, silicon is unsuitable for this spectral range because – largely transparent – it cannot absorb light over wide areas and convert it into measurable quantities. Nevertheless, special technologies make it possible to realize detectors and emitters with it.
The actually active areas of such components are stretched in membranes only a few 100 nm thick in a silicon carrier frame. In the case of the emitters, a full-surface heating resistor element is realized that – similar to an incandescent lamp, but much more compact and nimble – heats up to several hundred degrees Celsius when current is applied and emits broadband infrared radiation.
Within the framework of current industrial orders, the CiS Research Institute is developing and manufacturing innovative thermopiles together with partners. These sensors allow non-contact temperature measurement and are used in contact lot thermometers.
