The Institute of Physics at the Technical University of Ilmenau is currently hosting its 24th Ilmenau Physics Summer. This long-standing, one-week project week for high school students passionate about physics offers small-group projects on topics such as laser physics, semiconductors, LEDs, and superconductivity, under this year’s theme: “From Matter to Materials.” In addition, the participating high school students gain hands-on experience in the lab, conduct physics experiments, and deepen their knowledge through accompanying lectures.
On September 8, 2026, Kai Kühnlenz from the CiS Research Institute for Microsensor Technology spoke on the topic of superconducting electronics: Materials that conduct electric current without resistance at very low temperatures are used in superconducting electronics. Their electrical function is based on electric currents while the voltage is practically zero. As a result, no energy is lost as heat—a major advantage over conventional chips. Applications in quantum computers are particularly exciting today. The presentation clearly explained the basic functioning of superconducting electronics using simple, practical circuit examples.
