Practical microsensor technology – medical technology students visit the research institute

During a visit by students from KOMET (Conference of Medical Technology Student Councils from German-speaking Countries) on May 26, 2025, they were able to gain a small insight into our fascinating world of microsensor technology. MEMS Business Unit Manager Dr. Klaus Ettrich presented a selected range of sensor developments for medical applications. Dr. Bernd Hähnlein generated enthusiasm and practical relevance at the scanning electron microscope of the CiS Analytics Competence Center with the finest structures that are invisible to the naked eye

Scientists at the CiS Research Institute honored for outstanding developments

Two important innovations from the CiS Research Institute were ceremoniously honored yesterday at the Ilmenau University of Technology. In the presence of representatives from business, science and politics, the scientists received the coveted iENA Inventor Medals for two pioneering developments that they presented at the 2024 International Trade Fair “Ideas – Inventions – Innovations” in Nuremberg

Project start FiberFLU – Fluorescence module with waveguiding base

The aim of the market-oriented FiberFLU project is to develop micro-optical and microelectronic components for measuring fluorescence signals, which are to be manufactured in a compact and miniaturized form using semiconductor technologies. One application could be continuous blood glucose measurement based on fluorescent dyes

Packaging technology for thermal flow sensors

The newly launched Pack-Flu project deals with the design, realization and characterization of a robust and innovative packaging platform for low-cost MEMS-based microcalorimetric flow sensors for use in gas pipelines or ventilation systems. The platform serves as a scalable basis for flow sensors for analyzing and controlling air flow, hydrogen and other non-aggressive gases with known flow direction (e.g. in pipelines) with high accuracy

Innovative isothermal sensor with front cavities

In the completed NIVo research project, a new thermopile sensor was developed that works on the principle of isothermal detection of infrared radiation and is exempt from the front side. This combination enables the production of a new type of high-performance sensor in the field of thermography

NanoSense – Development of a hardness measuring head based on a novel combined force-displacement sensor

As part of the ZIM cooperation project NanoSense, the CiS Forschungsinstitut, together with two other partners, developed a measuring head for hardness measurement for integration into universal testing machines and xy manipulators, in which the measuring distance and measuring force are in line with each other

Voltage management in thin membranes for IR emitters and sensors

The project “Voltage management in thin membranes for IR emitters and sensors”, which was launched at the beginning of November 2023, is dedicated to the important technology optimization for the production and operation of infrared (IR) sensor chips. The aim of the optimizations is to increase the yield during production and to increase the service life of the components in use

Healyan GmbH wins ThEx AWARD 2023 in the “Founding” category with innovative “Strobes” stroboscopic glasses

Healyan GmbH wins the ThEx AWARD 2023 in the “Start-ups” category with its innovative “Strobes” stroboscopic glasses. The successful implementation of this idea was realized in close cooperation with the CiS Research Institute and thus supported the rapid market maturity of the product. We would like to congratulate Philipp Caspari and his colleagues at Healyan on this award and wish them every success for the future

Project start: Inkan – Innovative sensor cooling system for dosimeters

The newly launched project “Inkan – Innovative sensor cooling system for dosimeters” by the CiS Research Institute addresses the development of non-invasive dosimeters for measuring radiation doses in medical X-ray diagnostics. In contrast to conventional dosimeters, which are operated at room temperature, the aim here is to achieve an operating temperature of around minus 10 degrees Celsius

From 13th to 16th November 2023, the COMPAMED, the world’s leading trade fair for the medical technology supply sector, will open its doors in Düsseldorf and we will be presenting applications of silicon-based sensor technology in medical technology at our booth H23-4 in hall 8A within the joint stand of the IVAM trade association.
